This article provides an overview of the multiple roles vitamin D plays in the body, with an emphasis on its role in athletic performance. The data reviewed and presented pertains to the use of vitamin D in healthy athletes. The authors looked at data related to: (1) the positive impact of vitamin D on upper and lower body muscular strength; (2) improved fitness performance, including a study that related vitamin D status to the ability of athletes to obtain employment; and (3) mitigation of injury risk. Overall, there appears to be sufficient data to support vitamin D supplementation in athletes, even in the absence of a defined deficiency or insufficiency. The authors did, however, emphasize the potential for toxicity and the importance of monitoring its use.
